The HSE University Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) and Yandex Education are pleased to announce that registration for the Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis Olympiad (AIDAO) is now open. Participants will be able to put their skills to the test by solving real tasks from leading laboratories and services, as well as compete for cash prizes and admission benefits when applying to study at the FCS.

The olympiad is open to students aged 18+ enrolled in bachelor’s, specialist, master’s, and doctoral programmes anywhere in the world. Participants should have a good knowledge of machine learning, data analysis, and modern neural network architectures. Competing teams must comprise two or three people. The working language of the olympiad is English (translation tools are allowed).

The olympiad will be held in two stages. The qualifying round will be held online on Yandex Contest. The participants will be tasked with solving a problem in the field of quantum data encryption. The final will be held in person in Moscow at the HSE University building on Pokrovsky Bulvar.

The prize pool of the olympiad is 2,650,000 rubles. The top ten teams in the final will receive admission benefits when applying to master’s programmes at the HSE University Faculty of Computer Science. These range from extra portfolio points to admission without having to take entrance exams.

Registration closes at 10 am (MSK) on September 30.

‘This is the seventh time that we and Yandex have held this international olympiad,’ says Tamara Voznesenskaya, First Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science. ‘Last year, we rebranded from IDAO to AIDAO to reflect our shift in focus towards artificial intelligence. We are proud of our faculty’s contributions to the development of the professional community in AI and to strengthening international ties. We would also like to thank Yandex for their support over the years. We look forward to seeing talented students from all over the world at the competition.’

Kirill Barannikov

‘We make the conditions and practices in Yandex Education projects as close as possible to the realities of big tech. Participants solve genuinely complex applied problems from a wide variety of Yandex teams. For example, last year students worked to refine the training of a real model for Yandex Taxi. This kind of experience helps students to develop important professional competencies in teamwork and solving project-based tasks,’ explains Kirill Barannikov, Head for Higher Education Strategy at Yandex Education.

The olympiad has taken place since 2018. In 2023, the finalists developed a model for assessing vehicle damage for Yandex Taxi, and in the qualifying round the participants classified MRI brain scans. Each team was given access to the HSE cHARISMa supercomputer.
